Stand up to fight proposed library budget cuts
Mayor Gloria has released the city’s proposed budget for the 2025 fiscal year.
We are disappointed that Mayor Gloria’s proposed budget continues the trend of chronic disinvestment for our San Diego Public Library system.
More than ever, we need you to stand up for your library. Join fellow library advocates and speak out at budget hearings on May 3 and 8 about why these proposed cuts are unacceptable.
The city is falling further behind its Library Ordinance goal of six percent of general funds dedicated to libraries. The library continues to shortchange the community regarding books and materials spending.
And, this proposed budget adds crippling cuts that decimate programs at every library, extend the system’s already unreasonable waitlist times, and hamper technology access in communities of concern. This budget devastates the library’s basic ability to provide quality services. Its impacts will be especially disastrous for those who need the library’s help most.
When we show up, they can’t ignore us. Help us fill the Council Chambers with a room full of library advocates telling our city leaders why libraries are essential to you, your family, and your community. When you RSVP to attend, we will send you details on participating and speaking points you can use to help us fight these cuts.
Every step of the way, our libraries and library staff have responded to community needs by providing world-class services and resources that change lives daily in every community. They deserve to be treated like the essential city service they are.
